For many families, finding a dentist who truly gets their child is the hard part. That's the reason this practice exists. Dr. Rachel trained to care for children with special health care needs during her hospital pediatric dental residency, where she treated kids with autism, developmental disabilities, and serious medical conditions every day. She still teaches that work at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Here, special needs care is not a line on a service list. It's the center of what we do. We start by learning about your child, what calms them, what sets them off, how they communicate, before we ever pick up an instrument. Then we build the visit around that.
How We Make Dental Visits Work
Bright lights, loud tools, and new smells can overwhelm a child with sensory sensitivities fast. We dim what we can, explain sounds before they happen, and let your child hold a favorite comfort item. Noise-reducing headphones are welcome. Small adjustments to the room often make the difference between a hard visit and an easy one.
Children We Care For
Dr. Rachel's hospital training centered on kids whose care takes extra skill and patience. We regularly treat children with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing differences, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays. We also care for kids with complex medical histories, from heart conditions to seizure disorders, where dental treatment has to be coordinated carefully with the rest of their health care.

When a Child Needs More Support
Some children can't manage treatment awake, no matter how gentle the approach, and that's okay. We offer nitrous oxide for mild anxiety, and for children who need it, deeper sedation with a licensed anesthesiologist present. Dr. Rachel learned to manage sedation and general anesthesia safely during her hospital training. We'll talk through what's appropriate for your child and never push a level of sedation you're not comfortable with.
Cost & Insurance
Cost should never be the reason a child skips the dental care they need. We're in-network with Guardian, Delta Dental, and DenteMax, and we'll help you understand your coverage before treatment starts. Many preventive visits are fully covered by insurance. For treatment that involves sedation or extra visit time, we go over the full cost with you up front, in writing, so you can plan with no surprises.
Common Questions
We care for children of all ages, from toddlers through the teen years, and we adjust the approach to each stage. Older kids and teens with special health care needs are welcome too. The plan looks different for a 3-year-old than a 15-year-old, and we shape it to fit.
